Is  Opportunity Passing You By?

Posted by: "Sharon Moist" sharonmoist@yahoo.com   theindustrycoach

Several years ago, during my time as an agent, I represented an
amazing writer named Brian Nelson, who wrote a fabulous script,
entitled Hard Candy.

When casting took place for the movie, a relatively unknown Canadian
actor named Ellen Page was cast as the female lead. As a result of her
decision to do the part, the buzz that was generated around the film,
(including it being called "the scariest film at Sundance" in USA
Today), as well as the buzz about her performance in the movie, put
Ellen on the radar of US Casting Directors.

Several roles later she was cast as the lead in the newly
Oscar®-nominated film Juno. As a result of her decision to accept the
role of Juno, Ellen is now nominated for her own Oscar® Award in the
category of Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for 2008.

Hard Candy put Ellen Page on the map; Juno made her a star.

Other examples of other well-known actors taking advantage of the
opportunities that were presented to them, during the course of their
careers, include: Amy Adams, Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts, just to
name a few.

Amy Adams had 6 years of acting credits on her resume before accepting
the role of Ashley Johnsten in the wonderful, small, independent film,
Junebug. As a result of that decision, Junebug put Amy on the map and
also awarded her with an Oscar® nomination for Best Performance by an
Actress in a Supporting Role. The recent Disney® film, Enchanted, has
now made Amy a star.

Tom Cruise only had four small credits on his resume, before accepting
the lead role of Joel Goodsen in the movie Risky Business. Tom's
decision to that part put him on the map. Three years later, the movie
Top Gun made Tom Cruise a star.

And, last, but not least is Julia Roberts, whose career I wanted when
I was pursuing my own acting career. (Want to know more about what I
was thinking when I decided I wanted to be Julia Roberts? Read Tip #
4, entitled "Tom Hanks or Tom Cruise," in my new book, 101 Tips for
Actors, at: http://www.101TipsForActors.com)

Julia's first film credit was in the "uncredited role" of Babs in the
movie Firehouse. One year later, she was cast as Daisy Arujo in the
ensemble film, Mystic Pizza, which put her on everyone's radar screen.
After that, Julia's role in Steel Magnolias awarded her with her first
Oscar® nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting
Role, but it was her role in Garry Marshall's film, Pretty Woman,
which turned Julia Roberts into a star.

Ellen Page, Amy Adams, Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts all took advantage
of an opportunity that was presented to them, even if it wasn't a big
role in big budget movie.

So what does this have to do with your life, and/or your career? That
depends upon who you are today, who you want to be tomorrow and what
you want to accomplish during your time on this planet.

If you're happy with your life exactly as it is right now, then kudos
to you, because you are probably someone who has taken advantage of
whatever opportunities have come your way, and as a result, you are
living the life of your dreams.

However, if you're not happy with the life you're leading, then I
would challenge you to start paying attention to every opportunity
that lands in your lap, no matter how small it may seem.

Your life is your life and no one can live it but you.

However, the great thing about that statement is that we can create a
better life for ourselves any time we want, simply by making better
decisions or by taking advantage of opportunities that come our way.

So, if you're ready to make some changes, then it's up to you to
analyze those opportunities that present themselves to you, and then
make different decisions than the ones you usually make, because you
just never know how even the smallest decision could change your life
forever.

Sharon

Mayor Bates and members of the City Council:

Greetings. I had the fortune of being stationed in Alameda, California
several
years ago. When I was stationed in the East Bay, my fellow members
of the armed forces and I very often frequented one of my former
favorite cities-- the city of Berkeley. I used to visit friends who
lived and attended school in Berkeley. I enjoyed the cuisine of
restaurants in Berkeley, the Berkeley night life, and shopping on
Telegraph Avenue and many other Berkeley streets. We enjoyed riding
our motorcycles through Berkeley Hills. Numerous members of the armed
forces from Coast Guard Island in Alameda, the Coast Guard Air Station
in San Francisco, Travis Air Force Base, the Presidio of San Francisco, the
Presidio of Monterey, and other bases
past and present; and members of active, reserve, and National Guard units
all over
California and the rest of the United States have done the same since
your city was named in 1866. There are outstanding Berkeley citizens
serving in our armed forces today. I have personally met a few of
them in my years of service. I hope that they all vote via
absentee ballot. If not, I will make sure to encourage them to
register and exercise their voting rights.

Like all our fellow Americans, the citizens of Berkeley reap the
benefits of the protection and
freedom that the United States Marine Corps and the other branches of
service provide every single day. If it were not for our armed
forces, council members and other citizens in Berkeley wouldn't have
First Amendment rights, or any other rights from the Bill of Rights.
Banning Marines from Berkeley is akin to banning sanitation workers
from the city because a few people in office disagree with their
workplace odor, while Berkeley citizens enjoy the cleanliness of
having their trash taken out by them every day.

Do you think that ALL Marines and service members agree with this war
and this administration's foreign policy? NO. But we all serve our
country, because this is what we swore to
do. Simply because a number of people in office disagree with the war on
terror doesn't mean that Marines should be banned from the city.

If Marines continue to be banned, the City of Berkeley must secede
from the United States of America, and assemble its own standing army
to protect itself. Because I surely do not want to help protect a
city in which my comrades-in-arms and I are not welcome.

Semper fidelis,

Statement from Mayor Tom Bates on the Berkeley Marine Recruiting Center

I have heard from people all over the country regarding the action
taken by the Berkeley City Council regarding the Marines recruiting
center.

Let me be absolutely clear that this is not about the men and women
who are serving our country in our armed forces. I am a retired U.S.
Army Captain and I respect the choice of those who are serving our
country.

However, this community strongly opposes the war in Iraq and the
foreign policy of the current administration. I believed from the
beginning that this was an unjust, illegal, and immoral war of choice.

A year ago, the U.S. Marines established a recruiting office within a
few blocks of our local high school, community college and university.
Since then, community members who oppose the war in Iraq have been
exercising their free speech in protesting the presence of the Marine
recruiters. Pro-war protestors have also attended to exercise their
free speech rights.

On January 28th, the Berkeley City Council took action to waive the
permit fee for anti-war protestors one afternoon a week. Any group,
whether pro- or anti- war, can obtain such a permit. In addition, the
City Council indicated its desire for the Marine recruiting station,
as a visible symbol of the war, to be relocated.

I understand that there are people across the country that may not
agree with this action but it is the Berkeley City Council's
responsibility to represent the will of the people of Berkeley.

I also understand that the language proposed to the Council did not
adequately differentiate our respect and support for those serving in
the armed forced and our opposition to the Iraq war policy. I will be
working with the Council to clarify that language at our next meeting.

I hope that our country will end the war in Iraq soon and bring our
troops home safely. We are truly fortunate to live in a country that
can tolerate and accept a range of views and opinions.

--Mayor Tom Bates
