OPEN HOUSE, a two-act comedy deals with two elderly sisters, naïve and
optimistic LEONIE, a widow; and her tough, cynical sister, LOUISE, a retired
teacher. The two have lived most of their lives in the same large Victorian
house.
The sister's lonely lives take a turn when Leonie is notified of an IRS
audit. Convinced she owes somewhere between one hundred and one million
dollars, she turns to her son, NATHAN, for advice. A gambler and
ne're-do-well who never worked an honest day, Nathan insists on dealing with
the IRS on their behalf, and with the help of his girlfriend, SHEILA, a
not-too-bright real estate agent, cons the two women into believing they
must sell their home to pay the taxes.
Sheila's traditional Open House ends in disaster as they show the house to a
couple on the verge of a divorce.
The machinations of Nathan and Sheila are thwarted when the two sisters
decide to sell their home and run their own 'unique' OPEN HOUSE. They dress
the place up in the heyday of the home's golden era, the 1920's.
We are auditioning for the roles of some perspective home buyers:
MARK (20's to Mid 30's) and JEREMY (40's), A gay couple are interested in
the house, but perceive the presence of the ghost of an angry Puerto Rican
maid. The maid's ghost still haunts the house. Mark and his partner, Jeremy,
convince the two ladies to allow them to perform an exorcism. When the
ladies suggest they'd need a Jesuit priest for that, Mark informs them that
in another past life, he was, in fact, St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of
the Jesuits. The sisters agree to the exorcism.
PAT and Marcia. (Marcia is already cast) A married couple interested in the
house. Pat her husband is an easygoing, but hapless spouse, while Marcia is
a very business-like, jealous and skeptical prospective buyer.
STORY CONTINUED: Another set of perspective buyers, DEX and RON (already
cast) are burglars who are 'casing the joint'. They pose as bereft brothers
who've recently lost their mother. They make plans to return to steal
everything they can on the same evening as the exorcism. After the men
leave, Louise lets Leonie in on her suspicions that they were robbers
"casing the joint." They call the police.
That night, as they prepare for the exorcism in a candle-lit living room,
two endearing, trivia-loving policemen, officers ROBBINS and KRUPKE, arrive
to let the ladies know they'll be watching the house. As the ritual begins,
an intoxicated Nathan and Sheila sneak through the back door to get the IRS
letter before anyone opens it and discovers the truth. Thinking the robbers
have arrived, the four exorcizer's attempt to hide. When Louise and Leonie
realize it's only Nathan and Sheila, they tell them they're having an
exorcism and they're going to be robbed. Suddenly, just as predicted, the
two robbers begin breaking in. Moments later, the would-be robbers come
face to face with the others. Farcical, riotous pandemonium reigns in the
house until the officers come to the rescue and save everyone from each
other.
