Blog Tracker New Entry Notification ( Star Search Casting Forums )

lukeone,

Jon has just posted a new entry entitled "Launch A Career As A Successful Commercial Actor" in blog "Jonathan Parker's Talent Blog".

----------------------------------------------------------------------

While acting in commercials may not get you instant fame, it can be lucrative and it can help get you seen by casting directors and other industry professionals who hold the keys to bigger opportunities. Harvey Silver, one of the actors featured in our Star Search Casting Member Spotlight first got his big break when he booked a Coca-Cola commercial. The commercial was directed by John Singleton who has directed 13 films including Boyz n the Hood and 2 Fast 2 Furious, and produced nine others including Black Snake Moan and Hustle & Flow. Talk about power networking! Harry Silver has been in nearly 30 television shows and films since he booked his first commercial.

If you've been reviewing our casting notices daily, you may have noticed a recent post for a commercial for Bacardi that called for an athletic man, age 18-25, between 5'8 and 6' who was athletic, suave, rough around the edges, yet cleans up well. Very detailed description, isn't it? You may have noticed that film and television casting notices are generally a lot less specific. In comparison, a casting breakdown for a film or television show might call for a male age 18-25, any ethnicity. Or perhaps Caucasian male, age 18-25, attractive.

One of the reasons why commercial breakdowns are more precise is because in commercials, an actor's "look" almost always carries more weight than anything else. While in a two-hour film or a 30-minute sitcom the audience will get a chance to become familiar with a character, in a commercial they only have 30 seconds or less. Therefore it's paramount that actors in commercials must have a look that's instantly likeable and/or that's consistent with the image of the product or brand.

If you're interested in commercial acting, one of the best things you can do to prepare is to study commercials. By becoming more familiar with the types of actors that appear in commercials you'll get a better idea of what casting directors look for when casting commercials. And more importantly, what types of commercials your look is best suited for. In addition to learning more about what types of looks are well suited to commercials, you can also get an idea of what types of behaviors work best as well.

When arriving for a commercial audition, it's imperative that you look the part. For example, if the breakdown calls for a businessman for a cell phone commercial, make sure you come to the audition as if you're headed to the office – preferably clean shaven and in a business suit. For auditions where the breakdown doesn't suggest specific attire, be sure to arrive with a neat, well-groomed appearance and a dazzling smile. Remember, it's key that you're instantly likeable.
