CASTING CALL - One Act Play

Posted by: "LATONIA WILLIS" emergent_communications@emergentcommunicationsi

Thu Feb 28, 2008 10:38 am (PST)

CASTING CALL (Please read the entire announcement before submitting)

Syllogism - A PLAY IN ONE ACT (30 min)
This play deals with ADULT SUBJECT MATTER; no nudity BUT ADULT SITUATIONS AND SOME PROFANITY (think Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf, Sartre's NO EXIT, Genet's The Balcony)

Production History: Syllogism was produced in 2004 in New York City, Off-Broadway, at Theatre-Studio Inc./Playtime Series.

SYNOPSIS: An off-beat psychological "dramedy" about keeping up appearances, under the most drastic of conditions as three troubled souls are compelled to perpetually revisit the tragic situations and circumstances surrounding their institutionalization. 1. ARLENE (African-American, 35-40) - the anal-retentive executive of the den — irascible and given to strike at a moment's notice. She wields her intellectual prowess like a weapon, mercilessly ridiculing her fellow companions with lethal word play.

2. JESSICA (Caucasian, 18-23) — Sweet 16, the affable teenager carrying an overwhelming burden that will continue to haunt her the rest of her life. Her role as a mediator of the Group both calms and provokes the others into action. ***Must be able to play a 16 year old in physicality.

3. LEONARDO (Caucasian, 21-26) — the big-hearted man-child hopelessly in love and desperately in need of courage — spends most of his time trying to clear the damage in his head left by an abusive childhood.

4. DR. MASON (Any race, Any age) Psychologist at the Eternity House for the Criminally Insane. The Doctor leads the GROUP in revealing sessions.

The GROUP finds themselves inexplicably tied to one another's criminal past. Through desperation and despondency, they gather each day for a series of scatological free associative banter that belies a much deeper psychosis.

DATE: March 14, 2008

LOCATION: FREEHOLD THEATRE - CAPITOL HILL, SEATTLE (Part of the historic Oddfellows Bldg.)

TIME: TBD (Play to be part of a series of one-acts)

COMPENSATION: TBD (if emergency grant is received, actors will be paid $75/each)

NOTE: I have applied for an emergency artist grant to produce this series of one-acts that includes SYLLOGISM and will be hearing back from the arts agency on March 11. The entire production is dependent on whether the grant is awarded, so basically I need flexibility in the schedule of any actor who submits for the aforementioned roles. We need to rehearse and prepare as if the production will succeed.)

SUBMISSION: Please send headshot/photo and resume to castingcall@emergentcommunicationsinstitute.org
***In the 'Subject line' please specify the role you are submitting for. Please scan documents for viruses on your end, as I will on this end as well.

DEADLINE: ALL SUBMISSIONS are closed March 1 at NOON; Rehearsal will be announced after roles are cast.

CONTACT: L. Willis, 206-312-8596 with any questions (but please keep them brief and to the point! Thanks!)
