roto-caster update

A whole lot a nuttin!
Still waiting for the bits to arrive. I've done most of the wood.
I like those projects where you can just go out and
buy what you need and a few bucks more makes
no difference. OK. Doesn't happen often but...
Twiddle, twiddle..... (Sound of thumbs twiddling! :-)))
For those new to this adventure I'm building a few of these.

Hi Doc,
Do you consider to sell that as a kit? If so I am very interested. I'll wait to see some photos.

Plaster mold and plaster casting...

I am trying to make up a school project, but the issue I am having is
the expense of alginate. Someone suggested I simply use hydrocal to
make the mold, seal it real well with some clear coat (like krylon
clear coat) let it dry and then cast directly into that with hydrocal
or another plaster.
Is this doable? Is there anything I need to know about making a
plaster/plaster combo like this?? Thanks guys!!

Yes.

While sealing your mold a good coat of krylon will
work, you will have better results with potters
soap and/or steric acid/kerosene as your mold release.
In a pinch petrolium jelly thined with naphta works
well also.
You two biggest issue will be;
1. no plaster to plaster contact between the mold and
cast. Brush on your mold release.
2. NO over hangs, unless you are making a single cast
from your mold.

I planned on sparying it with at least a good 3 or 4 coats of krylon,
and on top of the krylon using a petroleum jelly as a release. I am
making a two part mold, which is where the complications may come up,
however, the model box is going to be made of wood, so really only one
side of the plaster mold will be exposed to the new plaster for the
casting.
One more thing.... will there be any detail loss using hydrocal
instead of an alginate? I am making a mold of a brain....
Thanks for the help!!!

Hi, I don't know if this will help, but I've been making Isle of Lewis chess figures out of Herculite stone powder. It looks like and is used in the same way as plaster of paris but it's incredibly strong, hence the name. It sets like stone and has quite a weighty feel to it. I don't know how much alginate costs so I can't offer a price comparison but I can highly recommend Herculite stone powder for use in latex moulds. Make sure you're buying Herculite and not Herculite II which is cheaper but weaker.
