Moulds!

Posted by: "gharnell" gharnell@yahoo.com.au   gharnell

Wed Feb 20, 2008 5:42 pm (PST)

G'day folks, well, with Valentine's Day (and my 21st anniversary on
that day) past us, I was looking at doing a 'love heart' with peoples'
names embedded in it.

My question is, does anyone on this list have links to any mould
(mold) suppliers who may have a suitable mold?

Thank you in advance.

Where do I find Airfix material?

Where can I find out about this Airfix 45D or 60D? I went to Airfix.com but
they sell model kits, not the actual "stuff".

Thanks,

Regina

Probably due to the fact explorer is beyond the worst browser out there.
Try Firefox or even Safari which is also available for windows users.

As a web developer you need to configure most sites just for
explorer and in
the process it limits what you really see especially on older
versions of explorer.

online catalog.

Is roto-casting like a salad spinner?

Posted by: "Regina Edmonds" fairy111@bellsouth.net   chrissis1111

Thu Feb 21, 2008 6:28 am (PST)

I am experimenting with making small rubber molds and have tried several
different rubbers but always have a problem with bubbles. I have seen
pictures of the vacuum setups and also the pressure pots, etc., all of which
I find extremely intimidating. As soon as I see the pictures, I visualize
my house blown up because I "forget" to do something.

I see a lot on this list about "rotocasting" which looks like the molds spin
and the material is forced into the mold with the pressure created by the
spinning. I don't think I will blow up my house with something like this.

If my molds are small enough, (maybe 4.5 inches x 5.5 inches), would a
simple salad spinner work? The salad spinner has some kind of contraption
on top that you wind and the inner bowl spins at quite a fast speed. If
this worked, maybe I could open the salad spinner and figure out how to make
a larger one.

Does anyone know (1) if this would work or (2) if there is something like
this already on the market that I could just purchase? Or is the salad
spinner completely different from roto-casting?

No no no

Rotocasting is a slow rotation process rolling the form about all axii(?)
for complete, evenly distributed coverage and set up of the casting material
used.

A salad spinner is more like a separation centrifuge used in a lab.

Hi Regina,

I don't think your house would explode if something goes wrong with the
vacuum or pressure pots. They're more into imploding than exploding hehe.
With regards to rotocasting, I don't think this will solve your bubble
problem with silicon rubbers. Rotocasting is a method wherein you would make
hollow castings of your sculpture with even thickness. This works on the
principle of spinning on all angles. You wouldn't the desired result if your
salad spinner just spins on one direction.

Cheers!

Here is a picture of a small roto-casting machine. http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/album/558467961yRWFeV It is used to make hollow parts like bottles etc.

There is also a drawing I saved from the net years ago of a home made centrifugal spincaster .

DOC is working on gathering parts (making a parts list) on what all is needed to make a roto-caster machine.
