Soft plastic - help please

Hallo,

does anybody know of any pu-resin that has the same feel and
caracteristics than the type of softplastic used for toysoldiers
(Airfix etc.)?
Colour really does not matter but it has to be a rather quick setting
resin since I plan to cast huge numbers. I tried smooth-on several
resins but still I have not found the right stuff yet. If anyone can
help, I am happy for any hint.
Thank you all
rgds
Wolfgang

Did you try the 45d or the 60d?

I tried the 45 D as well as the 1520. The 45 D is getting close the
1520 to thick to fill delicate small size molds even though the feel
is just about right but it also got a rather long demould-time (90
minutes) which is too long for casting huge numbers, even if using
more molds than one. Any other brand getting close to what I am
looking for???
Thanks for your answer
regards
Wolfgang

Have you checked to see if they offer a catalyst to speed it up?

You can add kick-it. The demold can be brought down to 60 seconds, but
it will stiffen it a bit.

Newby help

I just joined this group and I have hundreds of questions. I am working
on a costume for our passion play at church. This for the High priest.
He has a breast plate on his chest with 12 stones. I need help on making
these stones. Also these stones have names of the tribes on them in
Hebre. I have the hebrew words. I had to go this route because I
couldn't get the stones in the different color that represented on the
breast plate. So I though I would make them and paint them different
colors to represent the stones

1. They need to be 2 inch oval. How do I make model?
2. I need to able to paint them. So what material do I use?
3. Also they need to hold up to fast costume changing without
breaking.
4. Once I get the mold made what is the procedure for making the mold

Hello,

1. Plasticene (I think they call it clay in the US, the petroleum based
synthetic stuff the kids use... well I use it too), then take a RTV
rubber mould.
2. You could paint them or you could tint them, if they were made out
of a resin.
3. Resin is pretty strong, you have to mash them with a hammer to cause
them grief.
4. Put your oval of plasticene on a flat piece of wood, make a box to
go around it and pour your rubber on top.

However, this shape is not uncommon, you could easily get a pre-made
mould, and cast your resin straight into that mould, and not have to
worry about making a mould.

If you are in the USA I would check with Hobby Lobby and other general hobby and craft shops. If they sell any plastic stones they also know the supplier and may help you get the colors you need. Look on the package if they are pre-packaged and see if they show on the internet. If you can make contact with a person who makes costumes for one of the theaters in your area, check with the theater dept. in your local university/colleges. Just some Ideas of finding suppliers.
good luck
Les

This seems to fir the bill perfectly:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pnr21sjV2g
also, I believe there is a part 2 to it.

Her web site is http://proplady.livejournal.com/

She uses a silver backing. If you wrote the Hebrew on the backing
first, it would be
visible though the stone, if distorted.

If you are going for accuracy, they should not be oval, but rectangles.
I will be happy to help you with designing your model, but others here
will be of more help in casting it. However, if I can put forth my
opinion, I would think vacuum forming would be the better route for what
you want.
