Amy..... I don't know off hand where to find a thinner wall version, but
I'm sure they exist. I'm not sure this link will come through in tact.....

http://www.coleparmer.com/catalog/product_index.asp?cls=6749&gcid=s18582x048&keyword=rubber+tubing&wt.srch=1

....but there's lots of tubing styles listed there. The problem is
finding a place where you can buy it in small quantities. A quick
search on Google will turn up a number of such sources. Some diligence
in searching might turn something up ready made that will work.

Cheers,

Wow! 6%
I am not at your level of expertise but I do a little casting in
Urethane and also use Smooth-on products from Sculpture Supply in
Toronto.

This week I built a master, created a mold (OOMOO30)and cast parts in
Colorcast 326 tinted black. The parts, 7.5" long flat ON30 passenger
car sides, are actually about 0.020" longer than the master not shorter.
I don't have access to pressure or vacuum tools.

I expected a little shrinkage in the plastic but it expanded a bit, I
am confused and hesitant to move up to a more ambitious project that
will require parts cast separately to fit together. Is this weeks
experience a fluke or can I expect the combination of materials I have
chosen to behave consistently.

I wish I could help with your problem and am only replying because I
don't want to have the same problem pop up here if I can avoid it.

Don, I'm an amateur caster, too, but I have never had a cast part expand...
I would contact Smooth-On and find out if this is a characteristic of the
product you used... please report back your findings if you do, eh? Thanks,
Clark Cone

Did you make and use your mold at the same temperature? Silicone rubber has
a significant coeffecient of expansion, about 4X that of cured rigid
urethanes IIRC, so if you poured your casting into a mold that was 7 to 10
degrees warmer than it was when it was made, you'll more than compensate for
the intrinsic shrinkage in your mold - resin pairing.

Tom,
The mold and the castings were made in the furnace area of my
basement which is probably the most stable room temperaturewise in
the house, about 70 F. I just placed the mold back into the box in
which it was created, it fit perfectly inside the box borders and
over the master which leads me to believe that there was no expansion
or shrinkage during its production. The mold is several days old and
has been used to make 6 castings.

I am not complaining, just curious if this progression of events can
be expected to be duplicated in future projects.

Thanks for your input.

http://industrialpolymers.com/ hydrospan 400 is their shrinking material,
but you'd have to ask them if there's enough water there to catalyze it.
Also, 6% in length is not 6% in volume, and you've got to figure out your
water by volume.

Hi All,
I have some boxcars to make and I need to shrink them about 6% to get
them to the proper size. Can someone suggest a resin, RTV, or something else
to shrink these parts.
Thanks Barry

I can suggest one thing.
you can 3dscan them for about 300.00
and then have them scaled down to the size you want.
as a matter of fact after you have a digital file of your sculpture you
continuosly shrink or enlarge them to the size that you want.
and then you spit the file back out through the 3d printer.
the price depebds on the size

Barry,

Give this a try, Industrial Polymers Corp. You want to contact them and ask for "Hydrospan 400"., as it is NOT listed on the web site. www.industrialpolymers.com They do have a product used for expanding items also and it is "Hydrospan 100". which you will find listed under "Expanding Urethanes". Why they list one and not the other.. your gues is as good as mine.

Hope you find this useful,
Jeff K.

Hi All,
Description of the item to be shrunk. A one piece boxcar body the
frame fits up in the bottom of the body. There are also numerous
detail parts. The body is from .040 thick to .080, It is designed so
areas of the body can be cut out and replaced with open doors.
Thanks Barry

Barry, we use the Hydrospan a bit, and though it works great, it is VERY
flexible, and when working with mechanical and architectural items, keeping
straight and flat things straight and flat is a chore. Another thing with
the Hydrospan is that its working time is about the shortest of anything
I've ever used, so bubbles could be a major issue. You are probably going to
have to modify or rebuild your master; we just finished a Wall-E (new Pixar
character) sculpt that ended up being 15% too big, and had to resculpt most
of it, we were able to use the Hydrospan for the caterpillar track part, but
there were some places we had to fix because of shrink warpage. Bad cheese
mate; it'll give you another nice master to sit on the shelf though!
