roto-caster: trying to get my bearings...

Posted by: "DOC" doc@sympatico.ca   torobots

Mon Feb 11, 2008 5:59 pm (PST)

Last week I did my usual tour of the junk shops in Toronto
looking for roto-caster parts.

Not too much success so far.

Found some microwave turntable motors for $4.00 each. Might work
but they don't look very solid to me.

Got some roller-blade bearings on ebay. Should work well. Cost
about 50 cents each and I expect to use about 10. Couple more
than the design. Just waiting for them to arrive.

McMaster Carr has some bevel gears at a few bucks each. But,
for some reason, these days they don't ship to Canada. So I will
probably have to rely on the good graces of somebody I know in the US.

So far, the real shocker has been the pulleys. A place called Toronto
Bearing and Belting wants about $65.00 for two pulleys and a belt!

I need to check a few more places. I think I can get 220 belts for
a buck as opposed to the $6.00 I was quoted.

And if you know of any places where we can get this stuff
at reasonable prices please let me know.

Roto-casting or bust.

My local university has a HUGE salvage/surplus store that I get almost all
of my parts & supplies at. I have gotten vacuum pumps, vacuum chambers,
electric motors, a whole 4'x4' tote FULL of new v-belts, etc. They always
have
4 or 5 centrifuges of various sizes there for sale.

Don't know if you have anything like that around Toronto, but you must have
some kind of surplus outlet up there. If it weren't SO COLD, you might just
try
a salvage yard. The place that you take old machinery when it dies.

McMaster-Carr (www.mcmaster.com) has all manner of inexpensive bearings.

Lucky you!

I don't know what happens to university stuff in Toronto. But two of the
scrap yards I used to visit regularly have closed.

Must be more around somewhere.

I've picked up all sorts of good stuff at such places. It's just rare that
you can find exactly what you need when you need it!

Farm supply stores still understand that people build things, and often have
reasonable prices.

You can make pulleys out of good plywood if the RPMs aren't too high.
