Is That Pamela Anderson In The Checkout Line?
by
Bob Fraser
I was at the supermarket the other day picking up
some necessities (diabetic candy, patio furniture
and a DVD of Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle -
The Collector's Edition) and while I was in the
checkout line - I glanced to my left.
I looked left because that's where The National
Enquirer, The Star, The Globe, People, etc. are
displayed. C'mon, we all do it. We must look. How
else are we expected to keep up-to-date on the
relative hotness or notness of our favorite stars?
If the lines at your market are anything like mine,
you know that what could be an intolerable wait can
become an educational opportunity a time to find
out who's heading for splitsville, who's the world's
sexiest senior citizen, and who's proudly displaying
recent plastic enhancements.
Anyway, I casually turned to my left.
Staring back at me was an amazingly unattractive gal,
sans make-up who, the caption screamed, was Pamela
Anderson.
(By the way, as a point of information, if you happen
to have a couple of 'sample' grapes in your mouth and
you do a spit take onto a tabloid ... they are going
to insist that you buy it.)
The whole sad incident reminded me of something rather
important about our acting careers.
If you are pursuing a career as an actor, I urge you
to give the tabloids a closer look and discover a
crucial reality about getting your picture taken.
Let me explain how the tabloid game works: They offer
gobs of money to photographers who can capture a photo
of a star looking like something the cat dragged in -
and if she (or he) is in an ugly dress, so much the
better. Why? Because the folks that publish these rags
know that their readers are curious. Enquiring minds
want to know what the stars REALLY look like.
Now, the stars are aware that the paparazzi are out
there. And while the photographer's goal is to get an
unflattering shot of Paris, Britney, or Miley - the
star's goal is to look like the star they are in every
picture that's snapped.
So that's the game. The photogs snap - and stars pose.
Watch any awards ceremony (there's one tonight) and
you'll see the game being played out ... hundreds of
people with cameras, trying to shoot a "red carpet
disaster" ... and scores of stars doing their best
to look like they're supposed to look.
What's the lesson? It's just this: No matter who the
photographer is - it's the actor's job to make sure
that the photos turn out well ... for the actor.
This is critical data when you are paying to get your
headshots from a professional photographer.
The idea that a certain photographer is going to produce
a great headshot FOR YOU, without your involvement ...
is just not the reality.
No matter which photographer you employ, (and remember
there are 100's, of varying skills, at every red carpet
event) it's your responsibility to look like yourself
in your pictures.
The photographers that specialize in actors' headshots
know precisely when to click that shutter IF you are
doing your part - a pro's responsibility is to get the
"money shot."
Getting a great headshot is all a matter of knowing the
skills you need when you are in front of the camera
being prepared being in the game connecting with the
camera and staying concentrated on the job at hand.
Stars get to be stars because they know this is the case
and they work at mastering those skills.
Most of us discover the hard way that spending a barrel
of cash to get new headshots doesn't guarantee success.
For some actors it takes years of frustration and angst
(and sometimes thousands of clams) before they finally
get a headshot that gets them called in.
Why? Because a lot of us try to nail these skills through
an iffy learning process called "figuring it out on my
own."
This is a costly approach, almost guaranteed to cause
an acting career to be 'stalled.'
Because until we get a headshot that works a headshot
that gets us called in our career is likely to remain
moribund. (Which means: If you're not getting called in,
it's not you it's probably your headshot.)
Getting in the door is almost all about your headshots.
And observable reality is that nothing good can happen
in your career until ... YOU GET IN THE DOOR.
I urge all actors to watch the red carpet tonight - and
see what the actors who've succeeded are doing. Also,
be sure to look to the left while you're in line with
your groceries - and see what happens when stars are not
"in the game" and doing their part.
If you'd like to know more about the real skills an actor
needs to achieve better headshots, I hear there's a course,
a computer-based course out there, called Headshot Secrets
Revealed ... put together by some guy named Bob Fraser.
Yeah, that's right, I just plugged my own course.
See, I don't even look embarrassed.
Go ahead ... take my picture.
Make my day.
