Audition notice:
Shooting a 5 minute silent film called The Birth-Mark. From the Film
and Video Communication program at Seattle Central Community College
This project is an adaptation based on the short story, "The Birth-
Mark", written by Nathaniel Hawthorne in 1843. In the original
story, a scientist, while trying to remove a birthmark from the cheek
of his beautiful wife, accidentally kills her in the process. The
story deals with many themes, including man's attempt to overcome
nature using science, the futility of trying to achieve perfection,
and the destructive nature of vanity. We hope to capture and express
these themes in a modern day adaptation.
The adaptation will differ from the original story, in that our
filmed version will not provide as much detailed history of the
characters. The adaptation will focus more on the
husband/scientist'
to become even more beautiful. The death at the end of the piece
will be the result of the women and man's obsession for the women's
beauty. We are going to eliminate as much dialogue as possible and
let the images tell the story instead.
